Marymass – a tradition, a cultural extravaganza or just a fortnight of fun – your choice!
With roots going back to the 12th century, the Marymass festival has taken many forms over the years. It has slipped into decline once or twice, but has always held a place in Irvinites affections as a time of goodwill, fun and celebration of the history of Irvine.
Surrounding the many parades are some wonderful cultural events, like the Irvine Folk Festival taking place over several days during Marymass and the Peoples Bible where you can copy two verses of the King James version of the Bible in your own handwriting. Another popular event is the Open Doors event where the Irvine Old Parish Church (which stands on the site of the original St. Marys church) opens its doors to the public to show off its impressive architecture.
